Child Benefit UK: A Guide for New Parents

What Is Child Benefit?

Child Benefit is a regular payment from the government to help with the cost of raising children. It's paid to the person responsible for a child under 16 (or under 20 if in approved education/training).

Who Can Claim?

• You're responsible for a child under 16
• You live in the UK
• The child is not in full-time education beyond 16 (unless in approved training)

Immigration status: Your eligibility depends on your immigration status and whether you have the right to access public funds. Check with the Child Benefit office or an immigration adviser.

How to Apply

1. Download the CH2 form from gov.uk
2. Fill in the form with your details and your child's details
3. Send the form by post to HMRC (the address is on the form)

When Will You Get Paid?

• Payments start from the Monday after you claim
• Payments are made every 4 weeks
• You can request weekly payments if you're a single parent or receive certain benefits

Tax Implications

If you or your partner earns over £60,000, you may have to pay back some or all of the Child Benefit through the High Income Child Benefit Charge. This is done through your tax return.

Other Benefits for Children

• Free school meals — if you're on a low income
• NHS Healthy Start vouchers — for pregnant women and young children
• Child Tax Credit or Universal Credit — depending on your circumstances

Important Rules

• You must report changes in your circumstances (child leaving education, etc.)
• Payments stop when the child reaches 16 (unless in approved education)
• If you're not in the UK, you may still receive payments for a limited time
