What Is the Cotswolds?

The Cotswolds is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) spanning 800 square miles across south-central England. It's famous for its honey-coloured limestone villages, rolling green hills, and quintessentially English charm.

The Best Villages to Visit

Bourton-on-the-Water

Known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds" for its low stone bridges spanning the River Windrush. Visit the Model Village (a 1:9 scale model of the village itself) and the Motor Museum.

Bibury

William Morris called Bibury "the most beautiful village in England." Arlington Row — a row of 14th-century weavers' cottages — is one of the most photographed scenes in the Cotswolds.

Castle Combe

A picture-perfect village that has appeared in numerous films including War Horse and Stardust. The medieval market cross and 14th-century church are highlights.

Stow-on-the-Wold

The highest town in the Cotswolds, with a charming market square, antique shops, and the famous yew-tree framed north door of St Edward's Church (said to have inspired Tolkien).

Chipping Campden

A beautiful market town with a stunning wool church, the Campden School of Art, and the starting point of the Cotswold Way walking trail.

Things to Do

  • Walk the Cotswold Way — 102 miles from Chipping Campden to Bath.
  • Visit Sudeley Castle — A medieval castle with stunning gardens.
  • Explore Blenheim Palace — Birthplace of Winston Churchill.
  • Try Cotswold cream tea — Scones, clotted cream, and jam.
  • Visit the Cotswold Wildlife Park — Rhinos, lions, and a fantastic children's playground.
  • Shop at Broadway — The "Jewel of the Cotswolds" with excellent independent shops.

How to Get There

  • By car: Most accessible from Oxford, Bristol, or Cheltenham.
  • By train: Direct trains from London Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh (1.5 hours).
  • By bus: Pulham's Coaches run routes between the main villages.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April-May): Bluebells in the woodlands, lambs in the fields, and fewer tourists.

Summer (June-August): Long days and warm weather, but the busiest time.

Autumn (September-October): Beautiful fall colours and quieter villages.

Winter (November-February): Cosy pubs with roaring fires and festive markets.
