How to Book the Life in the UK Test
Booking the Life in the UK Test is done entirely online through the official government website. Here's a step-by-step guide.
Before You Book
Make sure you have:
- A valid form of accepted photo ID (see below) — a UK driving licence is not accepted for the test
- A debit or credit card to pay the £50 fee
- A postcode to find your nearest test centre
- Adequate preparation — don't book until you're ready
Step-by-Step Booking Process
- Visit the official website — gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test
- Create an account — you'll need an email address and to create a password
- Enter your details — name, date of birth, and contact information (these must match your ID)
- Choose a test centre — enter your postcode and select from available centres
- Pick a date and time — choose from available slots
- Pay the fee — £50 by debit or credit card
- Receive confirmation — you'll get a booking confirmation email
Important Booking Rules
- You must book at least 3 days in advance
- You must book using a valid form of accepted ID alongside your email address and a debit or credit card
- Your ID details must exactly match your booking — any mismatch means you'll be turned away
- If you need to reschedule, you must do so at least 3 days before
- If you need to cancel, do so at least 3 days before for a refund
What ID Is Accepted?
- eVisa — use a share code from your UKVI account if you have a digital immigration status
- Valid passport
- Valid ID card from the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway
- Valid travel document with a photo (emergency travel documents are not accepted)
- Biometric residence permit (BRP) or biometric residence card (BRC) — the test must be no later than 24 months after the expiry date on the card, or before 31 December 2026, whichever comes first
Note: A UK driving licence is not accepted. You cannot use expired, copied or photographed ID.
Note: You cannot use expired ID, student cards, or other forms of identification.
When Should You Book?
Don't book too early or too late:
- Too early: You might not be ready and waste £50
- Too late: You might not get a slot when you need one
- Ideal: Book 2-3 weeks before you want to take the test, once you're consistently passing practice exams
What Happens After Booking?
- You'll receive a confirmation email — save this
- Arrive at the test centre 15 minutes early
- Bring your ID and booking confirmation
- The test takes 45 minutes
- You'll get your result immediately
