How Much Does the Life in the UK Test Cost?

The official Life in the UK Test costs £50. This is the standard fee set by the Home Office and is the same regardless of which test centre you use or how many times you've taken the test.

What Does the Fee Include?

  • The computer-based test (24 questions, 45 minutes)
  • Use of the test centre facilities
  • Immediate results
  • A pass certificate (if you pass)

Payment Methods

You can pay online using:

  • Debit card
  • Credit card

Payment is taken when you book your test slot on gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test.

Refund Policy

  • If you cancel at least 3 days before your test date, you'll receive a full refund
  • If you cancel less than 3 days before, you won't get a refund
  • If you miss your test without cancelling, you won't get a refund
  • If you fail the test, you won't get a refund — you'll need to pay £50 again to retake it

Total Cost of the Process

The £50 test fee is just one cost. Other expenses to budget for:

  • Official handbook — around £10-15
  • Travel to the test centre — varies by location
  • Retake fees — £50 per attempt if you need to retake
  • English language test — separate fee if required for your application

Is the £50 Fee Worth It?

Absolutely. The test is a mandatory requirement for British citizenship and ILR. Without passing it, you cannot complete your application. The £50 fee is a small investment in your future.

How to Avoid Wasting Money

  1. Prepare thoroughly — don't book until you're ready
  2. Take practice tests until you consistently score 80%+
  3. Study the official handbook — this is what the test is based on
  4. Don't rush — better to take an extra week of study than waste £50

Does anyone know if the fee changed this year? The post is helpful but prices move fast.
