What Happens If You Score Exactly 18?
If you get exactly 18 out of 24 correct, you pass. The pass mark is 75%, and 18/24 = 75%, so you've met the minimum requirement. However, there's no harm in aiming higher — a safety margin gives you confidence.
How Many Can You Get Wrong?
You can get up to 6 questions wrong and still pass. But remember:
- There's no penalty for wrong answers — you're not deducted marks
- Guessing is always better than leaving a question blank
- If you're unsure, eliminate the answers you know are wrong and pick the best remaining option
Is the Pass Mark the Same for Everyone?
Yes. The 75% pass mark applies to everyone, regardless of:
- Your country of origin
- Your age
- Which language you take the test in
- Whether it's your first attempt or a retake
What Score Should You Aim For?
While 18/24 is enough to pass, we recommend aiming for 20 or higher. This gives you a comfortable buffer in case you misread a question or second-guess yourself. In our practice tests, try to consistently score above 80% before booking the real thing.
Common Score Patterns
Most people who fail tend to score 15-17 out of 24 — agonisingly close. The questions they get wrong are usually about:
- Specific historical dates and events
- Legal and political details
- UK traditions and cultural practices they're less familiar with

How to Check Your Result
Results are given immediately after completing the test. You'll see:
- Your score (number of correct answers)
- Whether you passed or failed
- A pass certificate if you scored 75% or above
What If You Don't Pass?
If you score below 75%, you'll need to retake the test. There's a 7-day waiting period and each attempt costs £50. Read about retaking the test for more information.
