What Is a National Insurance Number?
A National Insurance number (NINO) is a unique number used to track your tax and National Insurance contributions. You need one to work legally in the UK and to claim certain benefits.
Do You Need One?
Yes, if you:
- Plan to work in the UK
- Want to claim benefits
- Need to pay tax
How to Apply
- Call the National Insurance number helpline — 0800 141 2075
- You'll be asked some identity questions
- You'll be given a temporary reference number
- Your NINO will be sent to you by post within 4-6 weeks
You can also apply online on the gov.uk website.
What You'll Need
- Your passport (any valid passport)
- Details of your current visa
- Your UK address
- Start date of employment (if applicable)
What Does It Look Like?
A NINO is in the format: QQ 12 34 56 C (two letters, six numbers, one letter). You'll receive a letter with your number.
What If You Already Have One?
If you've lived or worked in the UK before, you may already have a NINO. You can find it on:
- Payslips or P60s
- Old tax letters
- Your government gateway account
Important Rules
- You can only have one NINO — don't apply for a new one
- Don't share your NINO with anyone (except your employer)
- Keep your details up to date with HMRC
What If You Don't Have One?
You can still work while waiting for your NINO. Your employer can start you without one, but you must apply for one as soon as possible.
