The NHS (National Health Service) provides healthcare in the UK that is free at the point of use. Most NHS services are free for everyone living in the UK, regardless of immigration status.
How to Register with a GP
Your first step is registering with a GP (General Practitioner) — your local doctor.
- Find a GP practice — search on the NHS website or ask locals for recommendations
- Check if they're accepting patients — not all practices take new patients
- Fill in a registration form — available at the practice or online
- Provide proof of address — a utility bill, bank statement, or tenancy agreement
- Provide ID — passport, driving licence, or BRP (if you have one)
Do You Need to Pay an Immigration Health Surcharge?
If you're on a visa, you may have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your visa application. This gives you access to NHS services. Check your visa vignette or BRP for details.
