What Is the North Coast 500?
Often called "Scotland's Route 66," the North Coast 500 (NC500) is a 516-mile loop starting and ending in Inverness. It takes you through the most dramatic landscapes in Scotland — and Britain — including rugged coastlines, white sand beaches, ancient castles, and remote Highland villages.
The Route
Day 1: Inverness to Applecross (88 miles)
Head west from Inverness through Glen Carron, then tackle the legendary Bealach na Bà — a dramatic mountain pass with hairpin bends and stunning views. Applecross is a tiny village with an excellent seafood restaurant.
Day 2: Applecross to Ullapool (85 miles)
Follow the coastal road through Torridon, past towering mountains and pristine lochs. Stop at Shieldaig for fresh seafood before continuing to the beautiful fishing village of Ullapool.
Day 3: Ullapool to Durness (82 miles)
The most remote section of the route. Pass through spectacular mountain scenery, stop at the stunning beaches of Achmelvich and Clachtoll, and visit the Smoo Cave in Durness.
Day 4: Durness to Thurso (82 miles)
Explore the far north of Scotland, with stops at the stunning Cape Wrath lighthouse (the most north-westerly point on the British mainland) and the white sands of Tongue Bay.
Day 5: Thurso to Inverness (100 miles)
The final day takes you through the flow country and past Dunrobin Castle before returning to Inverness. Stop at the Falls of Shin to see Atlantic salmon leaping upstream.
