The Life in the UK Test Pass Mark
The pass mark for the Life in the UK Test is 75%. In practical terms, this means you need to answer at least 18 out of 24 questions correctly.
How the Scoring Works
- Total questions: 24
- Pass mark: 18 (75%)
- Maximum wrong answers: 6
- No negative marking — wrong answers don't deduct points
- Results are immediate — you know straight away
Is 75% Hard to Achieve?
With proper preparation, 75% is very achievable. Most people who study the official handbook and take practice tests score well above this threshold.
However, the test does include tricky questions about specific facts (dates, numbers, names) that can catch people out if they haven't studied thoroughly.
What Score Should You Aim For?
While 18/24 is enough to pass, aim for 20+ (83%+). This gives you a comfortable buffer. In our practice tests, target a consistent score of 80% or higher before booking the real test.
Why Some People Score Just Below 75%
Many people fail with scores of 16 or 17 — agonisingly close. The questions they get wrong are usually about:
- Specific historical dates
- Political and legal details
- UK traditions they're unfamiliar with
These are areas where focused study makes the biggest difference. Read our difficulty guide for more on what makes certain questions tricky.
How to Check Your Score
After completing the test, your score is displayed on screen. You'll see:
- Number of correct answers
- Whether you passed or failed
- A pass certificate (if you passed)
The Bottom Line
The 75% pass mark means you need to know most of the material well, but you can afford to get a few questions wrong. With solid preparation using the official handbook and our practice tests, you should be able to pass comfortably.
