Passing Your UK Driving Test in 2026: Everything You Need to Know
Getting your driving licence is a rite of passage for many young people in the UK. The driving test has evolved significantly over the years, and 2026 brings new challenges and requirements. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about passing your driving test, from the theory test to the practical exam, including the latest changes and expert tips.
The Theory Test: Your First Step
Before you can take the practical driving test, you must pass the theory test. The theory test consists of two parts:
Multiple Choice Questions
The first section contains 50 multiple-choice questions covering topics such as:
- Road signs and markings: Understanding what signs mean and how to respond
- Rules of the road: Speed limits, lane discipline, and right-of-way rules
- Vehicle safety: Checks, maintenance, and safety features
- Driving hazards: Identifying potential dangers and appropriate responses
- Environmental driving: Fuel efficiency, emissions, and eco-friendly driving
You need to answer at least 43 out of 50 questions correctly to pass. The test costs £23 and is taken at a theory test centre.
Hazard Perception Test
The second part tests your ability to identify developing hazards. You'll watch 14 video clips and click when you spot a developing hazard. Each clip contains one or two hazards, and you can score up to 5 points per hazard.
- Pass mark: 44 out of 75 points
- Key tip: Click early when you first notice the hazard, not when it becomes obvious
- Practice: Use official DVSA practice materials to familiarise yourself with the format
The Practical Driving Test
The practical test lasts approximately 40 minutes and includes:
Eyesight Check
You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres (20.5 metres for new-style plates) before the test begins. If you fail this check, the test won't proceed.
Vehicle Safety Questions (Show Me, Tell Me)
You'll be asked two vehicle safety questions:
- "Tell me" question: One question where you explain how to perform a safety check
- "Show me" question: One question where you demonstrate a safety check while driving
Getting either question wrong results in one driving fault (minor).
General Driving Ability
The examiner will assess your ability to:
- Drive independently following road signs or a series of directions
- Handle various road types (residential, urban, rural)
- Perform various manoeuvres (parallel parking, bay parking, reversing)
- Make safe decisions at junctions and roundabouts
- Maintain appropriate speed and lane position
Common Driving Test Faults
Understanding the most common reasons for test failure can help you avoid them:
Not Observing Properly
Failing to check mirrors before signalling or changing direction is a frequent cause of failure. The MSM (Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre) routine is fundamental to safe driving.
Poor Speed Control
Driving too fast for conditions or too slowly (causing obstruction) both count as faults. Speed should always be appropriate for the road, traffic, and weather conditions.
Incorrect Lane Discipline
Choosing the wrong lane at roundabouts or junctions is a common mistake. Always approach in the correct lane and follow road markings.
Lack of Confidence
Hesitation at junctions or being overly cautious can be marked as faults. The examiner wants to see that you can make timely, safe decisions.
Preparing for Your Test
- Practice extensively: The average learner needs about 45 hours of professional instruction plus 22 hours of private practice
- Take mock tests: Ask your instructor to conduct mock tests to identify weak areas
- Know the test route: While you won't know the exact route, familiarise yourself with the test centre area
- Stay calm: Nerves are natural, but deep breathing and positive thinking can help
- Book a double lesson: Have a lesson immediately before your test to warm up
After Passing Your Test
Once you pass, you can:
- Drive any car on your own (subject to insurance)
- Display L plates while you choose to (though not required)
- Consider taking the Pass Plus course for insurance discounts
