Leadership

Nursing leadership, management, and team working.

Updated: 15 August 2026 Part of the NMC CBT study series

Leadership in Nursing

Leadership is not just for senior nurses — all nurses demonstrate leadership in their daily practice. Whether you are a newly qualified nurse or an experienced practitioner, leadership skills are essential for delivering safe, effective care.

Leadership vs Management

  • Leadership — Setting direction, inspiring others, creating a vision for change
  • Management — Planning, organising, coordinating resources, managing budgets

Both are important. A good nurse leader combines leadership qualities with management skills.

Leadership Styles

  • Transformational — Inspiring and motivating others, focusing on shared goals
  • Transactional — Using rewards and consequences to manage performance
  • Democratic — Involving the team in decision-making
  • Autocratic — Making decisions without consultation (used in emergencies)
  • Laissez-faire — Hands-off approach, giving team autonomy
  • Situational — Adapting style based on the situation and the team's needs

Team Working

Effective healthcare requires effective teams. Key elements of successful team working include:

  • Clear roles and responsibilities
  • Open communication
  • Mutual respect and trust
  • Shared goals
  • Supportive culture
  • Regular team meetings and handovers

Clinical Supervision

Clinical supervision is a formal process where nurses reflect on their practice with a more experienced practitioner. It supports professional development, improves patient care, and helps manage stress and burnout.

Delegation

Delegation is a key leadership skill. When delegating tasks:

  • Ensure the person is competent to perform the task
  • Provide clear instructions
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback
  • The registered nurse remains accountable for the delegation
  • Never delegate tasks that require nursing judgement

Change Management

Nurses are often at the forefront of change in healthcare. Models of change management (e.g. Kotter's 8 steps) can help nurses lead change effectively. Resistance to change is normal; address concerns, communicate clearly, and involve the team in planning.
