Why Take the Train?

Trains offer something that driving can't — the freedom to watch the landscape unfold without worrying about the road. The UK has some of the most scenic rail routes in the world, many passing through areas inaccessible by car.

The 10 Most Scenic Routes

1. The West Highland Line (Glasgow to Mallaig)

Arguably the most spectacular train journey in Britain. Cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct (famous from Harry Potter), pass along the shores of Loch Shiel, and travel through some of Scotland's most dramatic Highland scenery.

Duration: 5 hours 20 minutes | Best time: May-September

2. The Settle-Carlisle Railway

30 miles of breathtaking Yorkshire Dales and Cumbrian countryside. The Ribblehead Viaduct is the highlight — a masterpiece of Victorian engineering crossing a dramatic moorland valley.

Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes

3. The Cornish Main Line (Penzance to Plymouth)

Hug the dramatic Cornish coastline, passing cliffs, beaches, and fishing villages. The stretch around Lizard Peninsula is particularly stunning.

Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes

4. The Cambrian Coast (Aberystwyth to Pwllheli)

Wind along the Welsh coastline with views of Cardigan Bay, Harlech Castle, and the Lllyn Peninsula. One of the most underrated routes in Britain.

Duration: 2 hours 40 minutes

5. The Highland Main Line (Inverness to Thurso)

Pass through the wild Scottish Highlands, alongside lochs and through remote stations. The journey to Thurso takes you to the northernmost point of the British mainland rail network.

Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes

6. The Caledonian Sleeper (London to Edinburgh)

Fall asleep in London and wake up in Edinburgh. The overnight service passes through the Scottish Highlands in the early morning hours.

Duration: Overnight (11 hours)

7. The Heart of Wales Line (Swansea to Shrewsbury)

Through the Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Marches. Remote, beautiful, and one of the quietest routes in Britain.

Duration: 2 hours 50 minutes

8. The Yorkshire Coast Line (Hull to Scarborough)

Pass through the Yorkshire Wolds before dropping down to the spectacular coastline around Filey and Scarborough.

Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes

9. The North Wales Coast Line (Chester to Holyhead)

Cross the famous Conwy Suspension Bridge, pass Conwy Castle, and follow the Anglesey coastline to Holyhead.

Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes

10. The Far North Line (Inverness to Wick)

One of the most remote railway journeys in Britain. Pass through haunting Highland landscapes to the far north of Scotland.

Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes

Booking Tips

  • Book advance tickets — Save up to 60% by booking 12 weeks ahead on Trainline.
  • Get a BritRail Pass — If doing multiple journeys, passes can save money.
  • Travel off-peak — Quieter trains, better views, cheaper fares.
  • Sit on the right side — For the West Highland Line, the best views are from the right heading north.
