ILR Document Checklist

Applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain requires careful preparation of documents. Missing or incorrect evidence is one of the most common reasons for delays or refusals. Here's what you'll typically need.

Note: Document requirements vary by immigration route. This is a general guide — always check the current Home Office guidance for your specific visa category.

Identity and Travel Documents

  • Current passport — valid and with enough blank pages
  • Previous passports — showing your immigration history
  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) — if you have one
  • Travel document — if you can't get a passport from your country

Life in the UK Test Certificate

This is mandatory. You must provide:

  • Your original Life in the UK Test pass certificate
  • If lost, you can request a replacement from the Home Office

English Language Evidence

You need to prove your English is at least B1 level. Accepted evidence includes:

  • A certificate from an approved SELT (Secure English Language Test) provider
  • A degree taught in English (with ECCTIS confirmation if needed)
  • Exemption if you're from a majority English-speaking country

Proof of Continuous Residence

You need to show you've been living in the UK continuously. Common evidence includes:

  • Bank statements (12 months minimum)
  • Council tax bills
  • Utility bills (gas, electric, water)
  • Tenancy agreements or mortgage statements
  • P60s and payslips from employers
  • NHS or GP registration letters

Employment Evidence

If you're working:

  • Employment contract or letter from employer
  • Recent payslips (at least 3 months)
  • P60 for the latest tax year
  • Pension contributions evidence

Financial Evidence

Depending on your route, you may need:

  • Bank statements showing salary deposits
  • Evidence of savings (if applicable)
  • Sponsorship details (for work routes)

Accommodation Evidence

  • Tenancy agreement or property ownership documents
  • Council tax bills in your name
  • Letter from accommodation provider

Additional Documents by Route

Spouse/Partner Visa Route

  • Evidence of genuine relationship (photos, communication records)
  • Partner's British/settled status evidence
  • Financial evidence showing adequate maintenance

Skilled Worker Route

  • Certificate of sponsorship from employer
  • Employment details matching sponsorship

Documents NOT Required

You do not need:

  • Birth certificate (unless proving identity)
  • Character references
  • Medical records
  • Proof of intent to remain (unlike some visa routes)

Tips for Document Preparation

  1. Make copies of everything — submit certified copies, keep originals
  2. Organise chronologically — makes it easier for the case worker
  3. Check all dates — gaps in evidence can cause issues
  4. Translate non-English documents — certified translations only
  5. Submit more, not less — extra evidence is better than insufficient evidence
