Life in the UK Test vs IELTS: What is the Difference?

Two Separate Requirements

If you are applying for British citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you will likely need to pass both the Life in the UK Test and an English language test. These are completely separate requirements with different purposes.

The Life in the UK Test

• Purpose: Tests your knowledge of British history, government, culture, and values
• Format: 24 multiple-choice questions
• Time limit: 45 minutes
• Pass mark: 75% (18 out of 24)
• Cost: £50
• Where: At a designated test centre (computer-based)
• Study material: Official handbook "Life in the United Kingdom"
• Languages: Available in English only

IELTS (English Language Test)

• Purpose: Proves your English language ability
• Format: Reading, writing, listening, and speaking
• Time limit: Approximately 2 hours 45 minutes
• Pass mark: Varies by visa type (typically B1 CEFR level)
• Cost: £150–£195
• Where: At a British Council or IDP test centre
• Study material: English language preparation books and courses
• Languages: Tests your English (other tests available for other languages)

Do You Need Both?

For most citizenship and ILR applications, yes. However, there are exemptions:

• If you are a national of a majority English-speaking country (e.g., USA, Australia, Canada), you may be exempt from the English test
• If you have a degree taught in English, you may be exempt from the English test
• You are never exempt from the Life in the UK Test (unless you are under 18 or over 65)

Which Should You Prepare for First?

Most people find the Life in the UK Test easier to prepare for because it is pure memorisation. Start there, pass it, then focus on IELTS if needed. The Life in the UK Test certificate does not expire, so once you pass it, you do not need to worry about it again.
