Why Documents Matter

Missing or incorrect documents are one of the most common reasons for delays in citizenship applications. Getting your paperwork right the first time saves you time and stress.

Essential Documents

Identity Documents

• Current valid passport — must be valid at the time of application
• Previous passports — showing your immigration history
• Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) — if you have one
• Travel document — if you can't get a passport from your country

Life in the UK Test Certificate

• Your original pass certificate
• If lost, request a replacement from the Home Office before applying

English Language Evidence

• SELT certificate from an approved provider (B1 level or above)
• Or a degree taught in English (with ECCTIS confirmation if needed)
• Or exemption if you're from a majority English-speaking country

Proof of ILR/Settlement

• BRP card showing ILR status
• Or vignette/sticker in your passport
• Or confirmation letter from the Home Office

Proof of Residence

You need to show 5 years of continuous residence. Common evidence:

• Bank statements (12 months minimum, covering the full 5-year period)
• Council tax bills
• Utility bills (gas, electric, water)
• Tenancy agreements or mortgage statements
• P60s from employers
• NHS or GP registration letters

References

• Two references required
• One must be a professional reference (doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc.)
• The other can be any person who has known you for 3+ years
• Neither can be related to you or your partner

Additional Documents (If Applicable)

• Marriage certificate — if married to a British citizen (shorter residency requirement)
• Divorce certificate — if previously married
• Deed poll — if you've changed your name
• Criminal record certificate — if you have any convictions

Document Tips

1. Make certified copies — submit copies, keep originals
2. Organise chronologically — makes it easier for the case worker
3. Check all dates — gaps in evidence can cause issues
4. Translate non-English documents — certified translations only
5. Submit more evidence, not less — extra proof is better than insufficient
