What Are the Requirements for British Citizenship?
Becoming a British citizen through naturalisation requires meeting several criteria. Here's a complete breakdown of what you need.
Note: This article provides general information. Immigration rules change frequently — always check the latest guidance on gov.uk or consult an immigration adviser.
1. Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
You must hold ILR (settlement) at the time of your application. You must have held it for at least 12 months before applying for citizenship.
See our guide to ILR requirements for details on how to obtain settlement.
2. Residency Requirement
You must have been in the UK for at least 5 years before your application. During that period:
- No more than 450 days outside the UK in total
- No more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months
Exception: If married to a British citizen, the requirement may be 3 years with 270 days outside the UK.
3. Life in the UK Test
You must pass the Life in the UK Test. This is a mandatory requirement — there are no exemptions based on how long you've lived in the UK.
- 24 multiple choice questions
- 45 minutes
- 75% pass mark (18/24)
Prepare with our free practice tests and read about test difficulty.
4. English Language
You must prove your English is at least B1 level (CEFR). This can be done through:
- An approved English language test (SELT)
- A degree taught in English
- Exemption if you're from a majority English-speaking country
5. Good Character Requirement
The Home Office assesses your "good character" which considers:
- Criminal record
- Immigration compliance history
- Financial probity (no bankruptcy, unpaid taxes)
- Involvement in fraud or deception
- Association with human rights violations or war crimes
6. Intention to Remain
You must demonstrate an intention to continue living in the UK. This is usually straightforward if you've been living here for 5+ years.
7. Not in Breach of Immigration Laws
You must not have overstayed a visa, worked illegally, or otherwise breached UK immigration rules.
