What Is the Citizenship Ceremony?
The citizenship ceremony is the final step in becoming a British citizen. It's where you officially become a citizen and receive your certificate of naturalisation.
When Is the Ceremony?
You'll be invited to a ceremony within 90 days of your application being approved. If you don't attend within this period, you may need to reapply.
What Happens at the Ceremony?
- Arrival — check in at the venue and collect your name badge
- The ceremony begins — usually led by a registrar or local official
- The oath or affirmation — you'll make a pledge of allegiance to the Crown
- Receive your certificate — your certificate of naturalisation
- The national anthem — may be sung (optional)
- Celebration — refreshments and photos
The Oath or Affirmation
You'll be asked to make one of two pledges:
The Oath (religious):
I, [name], do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles III, His Heirs and Successors, according to law. So help me God.
The Affirmation (non-religious):
I, [name], do solemnly, sincerely and truly affirm and declare that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles III, His Heirs and Successors, according to law.
What to Wear
There's no strict dress code, but it's a formal occasion. Smart casual or formal attire is recommended. Many people dress up for photos — it's a special day!
Can You Bring Guests?
Yes! You can usually bring family and friends to share the moment. Check with your local council about guest limits.
What You'll Receive
- Certificate of Naturalisation — your proof of British citizenship
- Welcome pack — information about being a British citizen
After the Ceremony
- Apply for a British passport — you're now eligible
- Register to vote — you can now vote in all UK elections
- Update your records — inform banks, employers, etc.
What If You Can't Attend?
If you have a valid reason for not attending (illness, travel), contact the Home Office to arrange an alternative date. Don't let the 90-day window pass without attending.
