How to Apply for British Citizenship: Step-by-Step Guide

Eligibility Check

Before applying, make sure you meet all requirements:

• You hold ILR/Settlement for at least 12 months
• You've been in the UK for at least 5 years
• You've passed the Life in the UK Test
• You meet the English language requirement
• You meet the good character requirement
• You haven't been outside the UK for more than 450 days in the 5-year period

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

You'll need:

• Valid passport
• Life in the UK Test pass certificate
• English language test certificate
• Proof of ILR (BRP card or vignette)
• Proof of residence (utility bills, bank statements, council tax)
• Two references (one must be a professional)
• Marriage certificate (if married to a British citizen)

Step 2: Complete the Online Application

1. Go to gov.uk and search for "apply for British citizenship"
2. Choose "naturalisation" as your application type
