Driving in the UK

If you have a valid foreign driving licence, you can drive in the UK for up to 12 months. After that you must exchange it or pass the UK driving test. Rules differ depending on which country issued your licence.

Foreign licences valid for 12 months from date you became resident

Exchangeable licences (EU, Switzerland, Japan, etc.) — swap without a test

Non-exchangeable licences — you must pass the theory and practical test

You must register with DVLA within 12 months of becoming resident
